The iPhone.
|
Apple doesn’t make them easy to find but if you know where to look you can save even more on your new iPhone.
If you don’t mind the idea of buying a reconditioned product then Apple is ready and willing to sell you an 8GB handset for $349 - a $50 savings.
Apple hasn’t done much publicizing of these phones and they don’t make it very easy to find where you can buy them.
Nor does Apple say exactly how many of these reconditioned phones they have available at any given time. It might upset buyers to think about just how many bad iPhones there have been so far.
Reconditioned usually means products that have been accepted for return to the company (for whatever reason) and have been checked over and/or fixed if something was broken.
Apple makes it clear that their reconditioned products undergo a rigorous process to make sure it can meet their high quality standards.
Once it does, it’s sold on their Web site. It comes with their standard one-year limited warranty. And just like any other Apple product, you can also purchase an AppleCare Protect plan ($69) an insurance policy that extends your warranty for an additional year.
Everything about your reconditioned iPhone should be the same as if you bought a brand new one in an Apple store. As you should know by now, the iPhone has the most intuitive user interface on the market. But, it also comes with very expensive monthly usage charges from AT&T that you need if you want to get the most out of all the phone’s features.
Remember, the current iPhone model is a first generation device. New features, as well as updated phone designs, are rumored to be arriving in the near future. If that’s true, prices for the original model may drop even further.
Consider yourself warned.

HTC |
HTC's Advantage is part smartphone, part mini-laptop with a lot of features crammed inside.
|
At first glance, HTC’s Advantage could be mistaken for two devices. It’s either a very large cell phone or an amazing wireless PDA. Luckily, there’s no need to choose.
The Advantage X7501 is a 3G, GSM-based smart, world phone. You don't hold it to your ear - it's used as a speakerphone or with a headset. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS satellite location finding built inside and runs on the Windows Mobile 6 operating system.
The Advantage is a two-piece device. The main unit is about 5 inches long, 4 inches wide and two-thirds of an inch deep and weighs about 13 ounces. It has a touch screen and a thin (0.16 inch) QWERTY keyboard that attaches magnetically to the main unit. It also covers the touch-sensitive screen while allowing you to see when messages arrive through a transparent window. The Advantage comes with a magnetic leather case to hold both pieces in place.

Downloaded music may be the way most people buy their music these days – but there is a growing number of aficionados who are turning back to analog – all the way back to vinyl LPs.
Today’s rebellious young adults started turning to long-playing records because they looked cool -- flat, 12-inch, black discs from the ancient past, which stored only 50 minutes or so of music. So retro!
Then something happened. People actually started to listen to what was on those LPs and discovered they contained great-sounding music. Music that was more lifelike than they were used to.
They liked what they heard -- so much so that vinyl LPs started selling in numbers. Same for all sorts of turntables that play them. Today, many new CD/MP3s releases are also being pressed for vinyl fans.

Motorola |
Say hello to the new RAZR phone.
|
The original RAZR was one of the most successful designs in cell phone history. When it was originally released, the phone was revolutionary. It was slim, sleek and sexy – looking like no other contemporary phone of the time. Motorola also gave it a high price tag of $500 to ensure exclusivity.
As time went on, though, Motorola did little to improve the design while competitors were busy catching up.
Now those competitors will need to try harder because Motorola’s new handset, the RAZR², has gotten a ground-up redesign.
The RAZR² is not just one, single new phone. It’s really a number of new phones. Each U.S. cellular provider has been given the opportunity to tailor the phone to the services they offer.
The new RAZR2 models are the V9 (for AT&T), the V9m (Sprint and Verizon) and the V8 (T-Mobile). They differ by which features are highlighted on the outer screen – messaging, music or video.

The MediaFlex NG is the oddest looking, best performing Wi-Fi router on the market today.

The Ruckus MediaFlex NG is the best Wi-Fi router on the market today.
Not by a little bit – but by a wide margin.
Before I got the MediaFlex, I thought I had been happy with my home Wi-Fi system.
It is located at the far end of my apartment and with the help of a high-gain antenna, I was able to get fair-to-good wireless coverage at the other end. Signal coverage in my bedroom, though, was hit or miss.

Haier |
This gives you an idea of just how small Haier's Elegance phone reall is.
|
Good phones come in small packages. And that’s doubly true with two new, diminutive little cell phones. The Haier
Elegance (otherwise known as the Black Pearl) is a lipstick case-sized GSM mobile phone that measures only 3.5 inches long, 1.4 inches wide and a mere 0.6 inches deep.
The mini battery pack inside is said to last up to 3 hours of talk time and 200 hours of standby.
There are actually two Elegance models: One is a tri-band (800, 1800, 1900 MHz) world phone and the other a dual-band (850, 1900 MHz) handset for the U.S. market.
There’s no digital camera in this phone but you‘ll probably never miss it. That’s because there’s a terrific OLED color screen with animated, 3D graphics, stereo Bluetooth capabilities, a FM radio, a voice recorder, a MP3 player along with a micro-SD card slot to store your music, some games, an alarm clock, calculator, calendar, text messaging and a mini-USB 2.0 port on the bottom for connectivity and charging.
It’s hard to believe there’s room for a great phone in there.

This is a very large USB drive.
|
It really wasn’t all that long ago that I bought a Macintosh SE/30 computer. It came with 1MB of memory as standard equipment but was able to handle a grand total of 16MB of RAM.
That was an absolutely astounding amount of memory for that time. In 1989, most computers were dealing with kilobytes (1 thousand bytes) of memory -- not the megabytes (1 million bytes) or gigabytes (1 billion bytes) we take for granted today.
That’s why I was so astounded recently when I was looking for a portable USB 2.0 flash memory drive to hold a very large amount of data I needed to make portable.
When I saw the offerings on the PNY Website I couldn’t believe my eyes.

LED bulbs come in popular sizes including MR16.

Last month, the U.S. Senate passed a bill which could bring the end to Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb.
The new legislation, in addition to increasing automobile fuel economy, new laws against energy price-gouging, a big increase in ethanol production, also deals with saving electricity at home.
The bill would create new efficiency standards for appliance and lighting -- including changing old-fashioned lighting fixtures in U.S. government buildings, new standards for incandescent lighting fixtures and also calls for federally-funded Bright Tomorrow Lighting prizes for ideas on how to replace standard 60-watt bulbs with new, solid-state devices.
Through grueling experimentation, Edison produced a light bulb in 1879, which could burn for hours. Except for a few slight improvements, we’ve been hooked on Edison’s design for more than 100 years.

If you haven’t read or heard about Apple’s new iPhone you must be living under a rock.
|
Not all high-end smartphones are alike, but they do have one feature in common – they’re expensive.
The iPhone sells for $500-600. I’ve seen unlocked LG Prada KE850 phones available in the $570 (and higher) range and Nokia’s N95 retails for a lofty $749 when they can keep them in stock.
We’ve set out to determine which of these new super smartphones is the heavyweight champ.
Is it the new iPhone – LG’s Prada phone - or the Nokia N95?
Apple’s iPod-cell phone
First, the iPhone. Arguably, it is the new standard by which all other smartphones will be judged. If you haven’t read or heard about Apple’s new handset you must be living under a rock. You can read
my full review here The iPhone’s user interface is the best on any cell phone anywhere. Every person who has tried my phone has been able to master navigating through the iPhone’s features within a minute or two.

T-Mobile |
If you're not sure what a home Wi-Fi router and cellphone have in common -- read on.
|
Readers often write me to ask what can be done about not being able to use their cell phones inside their homes. Many people can’t find a usable cellular signal indoors.
Until now, the best advice I could give them was to stand near a window or walk outdoors to find an adequate cellular signal. Notice I said until now.
That’s because T-Mobile has come up with a clever way to have near-perfect cell phone coverage in your home. Think of it as having a cell phone tower in your home.
T-Mobile has rolled out a new service called Hotspot at Home. Using special handsets, the new service routes your cellular calls over your home Wi-Fi wireless, wideband Internet network.
